Akiyoshido

Akiyosido is located underground, 100m below of Akiyoshidai, which is one of the most beautiful cave in Japan. Rout for sightseeing in the cave stretches 1km long and temperature is 17℃ throughout the year, making cool in summer, warm in winter, which is comfortable for elderly and kids. Mother Nature created several mysterious shapes.

Akiyoshidai

Akiyoshidai was generated as coral reef in ancient time, about 350,000,000 years ago. Akiyoshidai is karst plateau where sinkholes and caves have been developed. Corals and some fossils can be discovered from limestones.

Senjojiki

Senjojiki is a prairie spread upon a 333m tall hill. Panoramic views of islands dotting the Sea of Japan can be seen from here. The boundless expanse of blue ocean and sky can be experienced in the fresh sea breeze. This place has been used as the location of TV advertising and publicity posters for Japanese car companies.

Motonosumi Shrine

Motonosumi Shrine is a shrine which was separated from Taikodani- inari in Tsuwano Shimane prefecture in 1955. There is an offertory box ahead of tori gate at the exit of back street, which makes your hope come true if you succeed to put a coin in the offertory box.

Yamaguchi Xavier Memorial Church was built to commemorate 400 years anniversary of Francis Xavier who was a preacher of the Cross. It was burnt down once, but rebuilt with a museum introducing Xavier trace on the 1st floor, and a church decorated with beautiful stained glass on the 2nd floor.

Yamaguchi-shi Saikotei

The building was originally a traditional Japanese-style restaurant called “Gion Saikotei” which was familiar to and popular with people from around 1878 to 1996, the current building was later relocated and refurbished. This Japanese-style restaurant was favored by elder statesmen in the days of the Meiji Restoration such as Kaoru Inoue, Hirobumi Ito, Takayoshi Kido, Aritomo Yamagata and also former Prime Minister such as Giichi Tanaka, Nobusuke Kishi, Eisaku Sato because it was started by a chief cook of the domain of Hagi. 28 calligraphy writings of prominent figures such as Kaoru Inoue, Eisaku Sato and related items are displayed here.

88 sacred places in Aio

The 88 sacred sites of Akiho were established in 1783, when Seikai Hoin, the 8th abbot of Henmei-in Temple, made a pilgrimage to the 88 temples of Shikoku, brought the talismans and earth and sand from each temple back to Akiho, enshrined them in various places in Akiho, and prayed at those places, designating them “Akiho sacred sites”.

The term “pilgrimage” refers to a journey of “ascetic practice” following in the footsteps of Kobo Daishi’s ascetic practices. In recent years, the purpose of pilgrimage has changed from faith to health, self-discovery, luck, match-making, and sightseeing, among others.

It is said that by visiting each of the 88 temples one by one, one can release one’s doubts, purify one’s body and mind, and remove the 88 troubles and worries.

This is the private school where Shoin Yoshida educated disciples. Shoin Yoshida intended to build a country assimilating education, science and industry of eastern countries. Many of his disciples succeeded to his will and did their best to build a modern nation. Many of talented people who played important role in Japanese modernization and industrialization learned at this school.

Hagi Castle Town

“Hagijo jokamachi” , designated as national historical place is located outside the wall of Hagi castle and formed with three districts, Hagi castle ruins, higher ranking samurai residence and townspeople living place. Grid-shaped town streets conserve old sight, such as Kikuya-yokosho, Iseya-yokocho, Edoya-yokocho and Kikuyake residence.

Ebisugahana shipyard

Edo shogunate removed the ban of domains building large vessel to reinforce military and navy power, and required Hagi domain to build large eastern vessel in 1853. Ebisugahara shipyard was established in 1856, then the first eastern wooden sailing vessel “Heishinmaru” was built and “Koshinmaru” was built after that. There is still large scale of seawall remains.

Ohitayama-tatara Iron Works

This is the ruins where people made iron by mixing iron sand with charcoal in a hearth and using “Fuigo” (a bellows) in Edo period. This hearth is called “TaTara”, and people operated this hearth 3 times 1751～1764, 1812～1822, 1855～1867. Iron made in place was used for the battleship “Heishinmaru” which was built by the domain of Hagi during the end of Edo period.

Hagi hansyaro

This reverberatory furnace was metal melting furnace for making cannon, introduced for one of the reinforcement military and navy power of Hagi domain. This reverberatory furnace is thought to be built tentatively in 1856, and there is part of 10.5m high chimney remains. This is very precious ruins for history of industrial science, because there are only two reververatory furnaces remains, Nirayama in Shizuoka and here Hagi.
