Quoted from 'The New York Times - 52 Places to Go in 2024.'
On January 8, The New York Times announced its list of "52 Places to Go in 2024" in the United States. The top spot goes to the entire North America for witnessing the total solar eclipse in April. The second place is the capital of France, Paris, where the Olympics will be held. The third place is awarded to Yamaguchi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
According to an article by Mr. Craig Mod in The New York Times, Yamaguchi is often referred to as the "Kyoto of the West," but in reality, it is a much more intriguing place. It is described as a location untouched by "over-tourism" and is a compact city of approximately 190,000 people surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea and the Sea of Japan within Yamaguchi Prefecture.
Mr. Craig Mod introduces Yamaguchi City as follows:
A flawless garden (Kozan Park) and the renowned national treasure "Ruriko-ji Five-storied Pagoda." The pottery kiln "Mizu-no-ue Kiln" at Tohun-ji Temple. Chic and traditional cafes like "LOGCOFFEE ROASTERS," "COFFEEBOY," and "Haraguchi Coffee." Restaurants where you can enjoy oden and other dishes at the counter. And if you walk 15 minutes, you'll find the hot spring town of "Yuda Onsen." Additionally, he introduces the annual "Yamaguchi Gion Festival" held around July 20.
In the Muromachi period, the 24th generation, Hironari Ouchi, developed Yamaguchi as the "Kyoto of the West" following the model of Kyoto. The recognition of Ouchi Hironari's contributions to the city's development, along with the historical traces, culture, and delicious food passed down for over 600 years, being acknowledged by foreign media across the sea, is a wonderful occurrence.
On this occasion, it would bring joy if you could visit Yamaguchi City. Beyond Yamaguchi City, there are many tourist destinations in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
For transportation, taxis are recommended for small groups, and tourist buses are recommended for larger groups. We offer transfers from JR Yamaguchi Station, JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station, and Yamaguchi Ube Airport to Yamaguchi City.
The Ruriko-ji Five-storied Pagoda is undergoing a major renovation known as the "Reiwa Era Grand Restoration," involving a complete replacement of the cypress bark roof for the first time in approximately 70 years. As of January 2024, the renovation is ongoing. (Project Duration: Until March 2026, with the restoration of the Five-storied Pagoda expected around November 2025.)
While the renovation is in progress, entry to Kozan Park, where the Five-storied Pagoda is enshrined, is currently permitted. Within Kozan Park, various special monuments are on display, including a historical scroll of the Ouchi Clan, AR videos by cut-paper artists depicting the Ouchi Clan's diamond crest and the Five-storied Pagoda, among other attractions.
